  • Vegetable Hydrocolloids to match synthetic formulations in Hair and Skincare Products

Polygal AG is a 60-year old Swiss family-owned producer of hydrocolloids for the food, pharmaceutical, textile and paper industries. The head-quarters and production centre is in Märstetten, a small village near Lake Constance. With subsidiaries in Spain, Pakistan and China, the group offers a wide range of Natural Gums, which are also perfectly suited to the cosmetics and personal care industry. Through our global network, with experienced distributors, agents and consultants, we are a serious partner in the research and utilization of vegetable hydro-colloids.

Polygal’s POLYCOS Natural Gums, e.g. Guar, Tara, and Locust Bean Gum, are produced in the manufacturing sites in Switzerland and Spain. Our POLYCOS native gum range is ECOCERT/COSMOS approved, and approved for Halal formulations.

The demand for Natural Plant Derived Polymers, originating from native gums, has increased in recent years for use in a wide range of cosmetics and personal care applications. There is a growing requirement for water-soluble Native Gums, as a natural thickening and stabilizing agent in creams, lotions, gels and soaps. Their ability to retain moisture makes these hydrocolloids indispensable in cosmetic formulations. Our POLYCOS native gums also act as texturizing agents, while offering the best skin or hair sensorial experience.

Our POLYCOS Cationic Guar Gum is used as a rheology modifier, stabilizer, and a conditioning polymer in hair and body care formulations, and is suitable for silicone containing and silicone-free formulations. It is now available as Fully Water-Transparent Cationic Guar Gums.

Traditional guar derivatives, such as hydroxypropyl guar and guar hydroxypropyl trimonium chloride (known as cationic guar gum), contain boric acid and borates. Since June 2010 however, boric acid and sodium borates have been added to the list of substances of very high concern (SVHC), which has seen boric acid limited or completely eliminated from many products (e.g. toys, cigarette papers, carpets, and all types of textiles). In response to this prohibition in the cosmetics industry, Polygal came-up with an innovative retarded swelling process which reproduces the effects of traditional borated guar derivatives in formulation set-ups as well as in production lines, without the need for boric acid and sodium borates.

Furthermore, Polygal has launched POLYCOS Starch Specialties in the cosmetics and personal care market. The particles of rice and corn starches are very fine and have a very distinctive feeling. The starches are typically available in sterilized and in modified forms. The sterilized forms used in skincare, liquid and powder colour cosmetics products, make a very interesting alternative to talcs, and will not dry out the skin. In haircare applications, the modified starches are suitable for use as a base for dry hair shampoos (aerosol and non-aerosol versions). The POLYCOS modified starches can also be offered in special versions for coloured dry hair shampoo.
